What does an air stone do and how does it work?
does an air stone simply airate the water?
what are the beifits?
is the little piece of clear tubing that comes from my in built filter ment to be attached to the airstone or does it just go in the water?

Airstones essentially do nothing expect look pretty. It has been proven (ill find a link if I can…) that in the time it takes for the bubbles to travel to the top of the water that almost no oxygen diffuses into the tank water.
However, they do disturb the SURFACE of the water, increasing surface area and stopping a build up of algae/oil on the surface of the water. This WILL increase the oxygen in your tank. (slightly)
Bottom line is, that if your tank REQUIRES an airstone for the extra oxygen for your fish to live, your tank is probably overcrowded anyway.
OH: and the tubing that is attached to your filter, is it facing the surface? Many internal filters have an attachment so that they suck air from the surface and blow it out the nozzle of the filter. This kind of helps with moving things around in the tank, but not much else. Try positioning the filter so the airline is sticking OUT of the tank and in the air. If the filter then emits bubbles as well as water, thats probably what its for. (it will be louder if you do this as well)
