You will need to purchase other items besides the aquarium such as filters, lights, décor, and food. Not only that, but also some fish can be quite expensive. In most cases, to get the fish aquarium set up properly you are looking at no less than $200. On the other hand, if you desire saltwater fish you will see that start up costs are much higher than $200 to start.
How many fish do you wish to have? An aquarium should provide one inch of fish per gallon of water, however, if you have a large surface area the water can support more fish as there is more oxygen. Of course, the size of the aquarium also depends on the type of fish. Some fish live in schools, thus they will need a larger aquarium than a betta fish that live in a small amount of water.
Where you place your aquarium is another huge decision. You should never put the aquarium close to heaters, doors, or windows. You will need to keep the water temperature in a specific range, being close to heaters, windows, or drafts can cause fluctuations in the temperature, which can make your fish ill.
As you begin your search to buy an aquarium, learn more about the fish that will be living in the aquarium. This way you will be able to know what type of filtration system you will need, lighting your fish need, and if you want to live plants. You should talk with a person at the pet store that knows all about the fish. Do not go to a retail store to buy your fish, you should purchase fish at a pet store or fish store to ensure they are healthy and that you have a professional to speak with concerning your worries.
