Aquarium Moon
Will a Eheim 2227 Wet Dry full of rubble Live Rock work? or will it increase Nitrate levels in reef aquarium?
I am starting a 83 gl Reef Tank with a plenum in the bottom, a small CPR Aquafuge as refugium, 120 pounds of Live Rock, 2×250 WattsMH lights, 4×65 Watts Actinics and 4 Moon Lights. I will be ussing 4 Koralia 4 Powerheads (1200 gph) with a eave timer to create intense tubulence.
Now here comes the interesting part. I kind of jumped the gun before reading “Natural Reef Aquarium” and went and bought a Eheim 2227 Wet Dry Canister Filter. Now it is outdated because it accumulates Nitrates. So what I am planning on doing if filling the chambers of the 2227 with rubble Live Rock and operating it this way. What is your opinion on this? Has it being done? Will it create more Nitrate?
Yes this is a great idea! I have done this many times before when setting up systems for my clients in many different canister filters including Via Aqua and Fluvals as well.
I refer to them as live rock crumbles and I have found less of the “nitrate factory” problems when set up this way with the right flow rate per crumbles size (larger crumbles for faster flow rates)
