The Role of Fish Oil: Depression Can Take a Back Seat Now
Would you believe it? Fish oil actually fights depression and drives it away. Studies have shown that fish oil is very helpful for the brain. It provides the brain with the necessary fatty acids, the deficiency of which causes depression. It is not enough to have lots of fat in the body. You need to have the essential fatty acids which affect most of the functioning of the body. In fact, your body can do without most of the usual fat. This is harmful for the body and the cause of many fatal diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids, obtained from fish oil are the right kind of fats which fights depression and a host of other diseases as well.
In recent years, there has been a transition from taking healthy fish and plants to the hazardous “fast food”. This transition has caused an increase in the harmful fats and a marked fall in the omega-3 fatty acids. Consequently, there has been a sharp rise in depression in most of the people. This fact brings to notice that fish oil can prevent depression and should be taken regularly and in measured quantities too.
How Does Fish Oil Affect Depression?
As a further fortification of our knowledge that fish oil fights against depression, it has been found that people of Japan and Iceland have very low levels of depression in their countries. The people there consume fish in large quantities and hence their minds are less susceptible to depression.
Although doctors don’t prescribe fish oil as a first line of defense for depression, ongoing research seems to provide more and more information in support for fish oil to combat depression. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil attacks the problem of depression from an angle different from that of anti-depressants.
Taking 1 to 2 grams of fish oil daily can bring about a sea change in depression. This is however true for patients with lower levels of depression. It fails to help patients with manic depression.
Fish oil fights post-partum depression
Women, who tend to develop post-partum depression, have been found to be wanting in omega-3 fatty acids. Since it is not wise to take anti-depressants while feeding the baby, fish oil is the best way to fight depression. Taking fish oil can even prevent depression and fight against the causes leading to it. You might even consider taking fish oil supplements to combat depression. This method is more useful as it overcomes the harmful ingredients that are consumed along with fish. People averse to fish can also take these supplements and get their required dose of omega-3 fatty acids.
You can even take flax seeds, nuts and other foods to provide you with omega-3 fatty acids. But fish oil is the most popular one as it is easily available in the form of supplements and is a better source too. So a regular intake of fish oil to fight depression can spare you a lot of anxiety in future. Say good-bye to depression and make fish oil your constant partner to good health.
