Need help setting up a Nano Reef, please?

I gave always loved fish, and have had several fresh water tanks. However, I am wanting to move into saltwater.

I have read several pages online and have ended up confused.

A friend of mine has saltwater fish and reefs, and does things differently then what I am reading online….

I really just need a list of the ESSENTIAL equipment to start a nano reef. (not including coral and fish…just the stuff needed to get the tank ready to cycle)

Also, I should say that dues to space limits, I will be getting a 5-10 gallon tank to start with, I hear this is difficult and a bad idea for beginners…. I have read this many times, but still, I cannot go any larger, so that size will have to do.

That said, I would also love any tips or hints that you have for keeping a successful nano reef.
THANK YOU DARWIN!!!! you answered one of my questions about the protein skimmer… i wasn’t sure if it would work for that small of a take….thanks!

Your basics on a tank that size are really going to be filtration, lighting, a hydrometer, a heater, a pump and heater in a separate container to pre-mix your saltwater, and preferably an RO/DI unit to purify your tap water before you use it.

After that, you’ll need your sand and live rock, which will get the tank cycled for you.

You can’t really have a skimmer on a tank this size, so you’ll have to make up for it with water changes.
