Is there a way to tell that a well water pump is going bad?
Our house has a well. We bought the house 2 years ago and there’s a receipt saying that the well bearings were changed in 1998. The house was built in 1988. Does the pump give you any indications that it needs service – or will it just stop working? There is a rattling noise I hear sometimes at the end of it’s run time.
Yes, it is a submersible pump.
Mike G is right, the rattling isn’t coming from the pump. It is most likely coming from the pressure switch, the springs rattle around a bit as the pressure on them becomes less, and this is normal.
A submersible pump for a 6″ well will run about $500 +/- when it does go, and my well driller said that the ones manufactured today last about 10 years max due to the plastic used instead of brass. An old pump might be worth rebuilding, but a newer one [10 years old or less] is most likely better to just be replaced.
