The plastic debris in the sea not only affect the ocean views, but also will be fatal to marine life. But coastal microorganisms can skillfully clear plastic components in the sea water. This conclusion was raised by Jesse Harrison in a spring meeting on general microbiology in Edinburg. This research is accomplished together by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science of the University of Sheffield.
Mixed marine microorganisms can live on the plastic waste and can expand to more broad environment from a small group. This is possible for marine living creature which acts with plastics to take part in various activities which will be helpful to decompose those harmful plastics and toxic chemicals. Plastic pollution is a long-term problem, because the decomposition of plastics needed for thousands of years in the nature. “The plastic garbage in our living was caused by the consumers’ random litter. The ocean’s rapid growing and a number of man-made wastes were mostly from them.” Jessie Harrison explained.
For a long time, the plastic elements have smaller and smaller size in the ocean which is the result of the natural force. Those plastic wracks equal to or even smaller than 5millimeter are called micro plastic. This kind of plastic is very dangerous because they can absorb toxic chemicals and transfer to the internal body of marine animals through digestive system. Microorganism is the largest organic life in abundance in marine environment and this is the first time to research how they have an effect on plastic fragments besed on genes. This new issue researches the connection between microorganism and pieces, polyethylene–a common component in plastic bag. Scientists discover that plastic is occupied by many bacteriums rapidly, then generating a biofilm on its surface. What the interesting thing is that the biofilm should have a kind of special ocean bacterium to generate. The group, led by Dr. Mark Osborn at Sheffield University, plans to investigate how the microbe interact with microplastics, especially when they vary with changing conditions under the sea. They believe that it has great goodness to the environment. Mr Harrison introduces that the microbe plays an important role in maintaining the marine livings and they are mostly probable to break down the poisonous chemical substances even the plastic bio-organic.
