Cool Fish Tank Ideas

Pet fish for cool climate and small tank?

I would love a pet fish, but I only have enough room for a very small tank. I am looking for a cool climate, easy care, atrractive(ish), good natured type of fish.
It would be great if I could get some ideas on species of fish and their requirements.

How small of a tank are we talking about? Some people see a vase as a small tank… If it’s at least 5 gallons, consider some of the smaller native Darter or Goby species as well as Guppies. All do quite well in temperatures in the 60’s (Guppies will prefer upper 60’s- low 70’s) and stay relatively small. As TopPotts suggested, a Paradise Gourami could also work, though they tend to mix poorly with other fish.

In a small tank, avoid schooling fish like Barbs, Minnows, Danios, or Tetras and certainly avoid large fish like Goldfish (8-16″) or Weather/Dojo Loaches (10″).
