question about uv sterilizer?
I just bought a uv sterilizer to control algae for my Reef Tank. Can someone let me know if uv sterilizer safe for corals? Another question is I have some black stuff growing on top of my sand. Don’t know whether it algae or something else. I scoop it out almost everyday and do partial water change almost every other day but it still there and they spread really fast. It appears like something got burned on top of the sand. This is the main reason I’m buying the uv sterilizer. I can email a picture of my tank if needed. Thank you.

Second, This sounds like you are treating the end problem and not the cause. The algae (I’m guessing green) is likely caused by increased nitrates, but phosphates can also spur on it’s growth. Have your LFS check the parameters on your water, to look for these. Some other things to look for are. Large gran sand, a sand bed depth between 1 and 4 inches, overdosing supplements, forgotten filters, trickle filters, and low water turn over. These and many more can cause rapid growth of algae.
