Diy 10 gallon sump issues!?
Im starting a 20 gallon Reef Tank and i would like to add a 10 gallon sump for it. I have a few questions before i waste money on the supplies.
How many plexiglass cascades should i use in my sump?
How high should the water level be in my sump?
For the steup i have what gph rating should i use?
What is the proper pvc piping length for my rated tank? (3/4″, 1″, etc…)
First off, is your tank drilled or will you be using an overflow, this will help you decide what size return pump you would need.
In regards to the sump, it really depends on how you want to lay it out. Search for ‘Melev’s reef’ and check out different designes.
I’m not sure what you mean by ‘cascades’, but I would lay out the sump something like this, Water coming in from the main tank drains in on the left side of the tank and in this compartment you can house your skimmer and heater followed by baffles (3 plexiglass sheets in succession [middle one higher than the other 2]). Personally I would get a return pump that is rated higher than your overflows as you can always ‘Tee’ off the excess flow back to the sump. I would go with a 3/4″ tubing with a mag 5 return.
