Stocking my 20 gallon tank.?
I want an exotic, active, and entertaining fish for my 20 gallon tank. 2-4 fish total. Its a 30×15x10 acrylic tank. Give me some ideas here, no goldfish/tetras/barbs/lame fish.
Also if anyone has the old school ebo jager, with the 1-9 settings, if you could tell me the approx temp for each setting that would be awesome, because i cant find it anywhere.
There are plenty of weird and exotic things you can put in a twenty gallon. Leaf Fish (Monochirus polyacanthus) are amazing. They look exactly like dead leaves floating through the water, but when they get close enough to their prey (smaller fish) they open their mouths and suck them in. They can swallow fish more than half their size! However, they can be tricky. You need to adjust the pH of the water down to about 6.0 or they won’t last long. Another interesting fish are Figure Eight Puffers. They are freshwater and grow to about three inches. They can be aggressive with one another. They will eat shrimp, snails and thawed fish fillets. Some Dwarf African Cichlids would work fine also, though you would need more than four, say at least six. This is so their aggression is dispursed. Four will just kill each other. Many of the Neolamprologus species stay small (under two inches) and live inside snail shells. You can place a number of shells on the substrate and the fish will bury them until the opening is just above the sand. The females live inside the shells while the males patrol their territories. Eggs are laid in the shells and the females look after the young for a few weeks. Males will even “kidnap” females from rival males by grabbing the edge of the snail shell and dragging her over to his territory.
One of my favorite species is the African Butterflyfish (Pantodon buchholtzi). These are bizarre lokking fish that hang just below the waters surface. If you keep just a small colony of these (again, at least four), it may be better to only fill the tank three-quarters of the way so you’ll be able to see them. Provide plenty of floating plants for them to rest in. They don’t move around a lot…until you feed them! They eat insects, so you’ll have to buy crickets a couple of times a week, but they really jump after them and can swallow huge bugs! Their mouth is shaped like the back end of a cargo plane. It drops down like a trap door and sucks in the prey. Also, keep a good lid on the tank. These fishes large pectoral fins enable them to glide for short distances. I found one in a shoe six feet from the tank once!
Finally, while not much to look at, the Mexican Goodieds are quite interesting. These are “true” livebearing fishes, that is, the young come out attached to an umbilical cord and placenta-like structure called a Trophotaenia. I’ve seen the females swimming around the tank with a baby spiraling behind her until it snaps loose and swims away. The most colorful species is the Red-tailed Goodied (Xenotoca eiseni).
