Fish Tank Air Pump Ornaments
algae eater/ sucker fish question?
I just bought a new fish tank (5 gal.). It came with a water filter, but its a new type to me; it doesn’t pour the water back into the tank in the waterfall fasion. I am worried that the water does not get any oxygen. I’ve only had the tank for a day with 5 small fish in it, so they’re not in any immediat danger, but does this mean I need to buy an air pump too?
I’ve only got 4 small gold fish, and an algae eater (i believe its a plecostoma). My question is wether he will last long without algae; I can’t imagine that the new tank will have any built up yet. I am afraid that by the time there is enough algae build up, that he will have starved.
I read that they eat zucchini, peas and other vegies, and all I had was pickles. I put a slice in over night (they are nocturnal) and I cant find it, so I assume he ate it, but he could’ve just dragged it under his cave ornament and I just can’t see it.
Might it be a good idea to put the tank in direct sunlight as to let algae grow?
Your fish will be in extreme danger in a couple to 3 weeks. This will be the point where your ammonia will spike as the new aquarium cycles. Shortly after that you will see a spike in the nitrIte level, which is also extremely poisonous to your fish. At about 6 to 8 weeks the ammonia and nitrItes will drop to 0 and you will start seeing increasing levels of nitrAtes. THAT is when your aquarium will be safe for fish. I can’t imagine that the solutions they use to pickle cucumbers are any good for the water in your aquarium either. You need to study a lot on how an aquarium works and cycles before you are ready to keep tropical fish. www.fishlore.com has some great info on how to set up and cycle an aquarium without harming any fish.
