Fish Tank Algae Problem

fish tank algae problem
fish tank algae problem?

i cant throw in a pleco, its a turtle tank, there is a western painted and a soft shell. thee both about 3 inches.
he tank is a 50 gallon breeder.
its loaded with algae, i keep hafting to scrub it out.
any suggestions?

Since it’s a turtle tank, I assume you have a semi-dry setup. A little bit of algae is probably not a bad thing for these guys as they likely snack on it sometimes, and you can just scrape off the algae thats growing on the panes used for viewing (front and sides).

You could add some live plants to your tank, as these will compete with the algae for the bionutrients, and slow down the growth of new algae. Also, lessening the amount of light your tank gets will help, as well as frequent water changes to reduce the amount of ammonia and nitrites that feed the algae. Turtles are pretty messy little critters anyway, so changing the water more often will probably make your tank smell a lot better =)

There are quite a few commercial algicides on the market that (they say) are turtle-safe. Most of these products are found in pond supply shops. I linked a couple of the ones I found at the bottom of the page.

Hope it helps.
