rusty coloured growth all over inside of tank?
Hello, I was wondering if someone might know what is going on inside our fishtank. Some background info. About a month ago I accidentally put soapy water in our fish tank. I got the fish out quick (just 4 minnows from our creek, and two apple snails) and put them is a pot of water. I then completely dumped everything and scrubbed the tank until all signs of residue were gone. All plastic plants and stones were washed hard and in hot hot water until all was free. I then put fresh water back in. (filter cartridge was replaced too) Because I couldn’t keep the fish in a pot for the required amount of time to let the tank cycle, I put them back in 24 hrs later. All survived the incident and have been doing well and then 2 weeks ago I noticed a bit of reddish growth on the walls of tank and now it is totally covering the tank and everything in it. All fish seem fine and I have been keeping the light off since it started. What could this be and what should I do about it? Thanks!
I don’t know what that is other than some sort of algae. I don’t use lights or a cover for my tank anymore, and I have never had an algae problem since (one12-year old goldfish).
Do use epsom salts and peroxide in your tank? If not, put in a pinch of epsom salts and 1/4 tsp. hydrogen peroxide. Whenever I have tank problems it is generally my salts are low or gone, and peroxide is a good, quick fix for many icky tank problems.
And a hint, next time you clean your tank or any other elements, use Oxy — it is safe for tanks and fish (even if you don’t get all the residue) and does a superior job of cleaning with minimal scrubbing.
