Fish Tank Fungus Information

Is it true that putting pennies in a tank can help with fungus?

Hi!
I just heard that putting pennies in a fish tank, in the filter for example, can help clear a fungal infections as fungus can’t stand copper ions.
I always tell people never to put coins in their tanks, as more often than not they leach metals into the water.
Has anyone heard of this?
Is there any backing to this idea?
It seems a bit fishy to me, but I don’t have any information directly refuting it.
Thanks : )

No, pennies won’t kill fungus but they will kill fish, snails and invertebrates.
Pennies prior to 1986 do have some copper in them, you have to go way back to get solid copper pennies.
Those pennies prior to 1986 do have enough copper in them to effect your water parameters, but not in a good way. Today’s pennies are a mixture of many different metals that vary from batch to batch when being minted. Any heavy metals in your tank are not good.
