Fish Tank Odor
My new fish tank is smelly?
My fish tank is smelling but the water is crystal clear the ph is fine, the ammonia is at about .50 (it’s freshwater). Its in my bedroom and it smells. Is it supposed to have an odor. is there anything i can do about that? Why would that be?
A tank will normaly have a slight smell, but it should be a bit like a clean lake or stream. The algae and bacteria breaking down the waste are a natural part of the tank the same as in a natural water body. But you should only notice if you put your head in the tank. If you can notice it right around the room, or it doesn’t smell like natural water, then you may have a problem.
As you have ammonia on your water test there is something not quite right. If the tank is new, then it’s still cycling and you may have an imbalance with the bacteria in the tank/filter. This will come right with time, but if the ammonia goes over 0.5 then do some partial water changes to control that.
If the tank has been established for a while (months) then you have a filter problem.
