Fish Tank Stands 10 Gallon
Will this support a 20gal long and a 10 gallon fish tank?
I have a 10 gallon fish tank currently with my goldfish in it and for Christmas my fiance’ bought me a 20 gallon long. I would like to put them both on the same stand, but they ones at the pet store would allow the 10 gallon to fall through the crack. So I went to Lowe’s and they have a set of shelves that support 200lbs per shelf and they have another that would support 300lbs per shelf. I was wondering if you thought this would work. I would be devastated if the shelves collapsed and crushed the tanks. Thank you.

Okay, let’s look at this from a rational perspective. Water weighs about 8.3 lbs per gallon, so the 20 Long would be close to 200 lbs including tank itself, substrate, decorations, livestock and equipment. The 10 Gallon would be close to 100 lbs. The unit that supports 300 lbs. might be okay, but it would probably be a good idea to keep the tanks on a lower shelf to be safe. If you just did a tank per shelf, the 300 lb rated shelf should be adequate. It would be pushing it to put them on the same shelf though.
People are saying that it doesn’t look safe, but I’ve known many people who use these kinds of units to have multiple shrimp tanks on one shelf and often fill up all of the shelves. I’ve also seen them used in laboratories. Just make sure everything’s properly put together and you may have to check or tighten screws every once in a while.
EDIT: I found a picture of a unit similar to the what you were looking at. There are two 10 gallon tanks per shelf (so close to 200 lbs) with a 29 Gallon on the bottom shelf (probably a bit over 300 lbs). The unit you’re looking at actually looks a bit sturdier.
