Water Hammer
Banging pipes or more generally known as water hammer is a common problem but is easy to fix. As a plumber in Sheffield I have come across this problem numerous times.
Water hammer can be damaging to your pipes, creating breaks on pipe joints leading to costly water damage. It is always advisable to fix the problem as soon as possible.
Water hammer usually happens in high pressure domestic plumbing systems when a valve is closed suddenly, stopping the fast flow of water causing the water in the pipe to ripple and the pipe to vibrate. If pipe work is loosely or inadequately fixed this will only add to the problem.
Possible causes of water hammer
- Float valve and ball valves
- Dish washers and washing machines
- Faulty taps – Worn washer jumper
- Faulty stop cocks – Worn washer jumper
The following may reduce or eliminate water hammer
Ensure pipe work is adequately clipped
Check washers on ball and float valves are not worn
If you have a plastic cold water storage tank, check the metal reinforcing plate has been fitted with the ball valve. The float bobs about when the mains cold rushes into the tank, because the water is made to ripple this causes the valve to open and close causing the pipe work to vibrate. The reinforcing plate will help minimize the flexing of the tank and ball valve, reducing water hammer.
Fit a Shock arrestor – a shock arrestor is a small expansion vessel and works by absorbing the shock wave caused by water hammer. This must be located as close to the source of the problem as possible.
