Fresh Salt
How do I accurately tell if a Pearl is a Pearl; salt water or fresh?
Besides the “rub the Pearl on your teeth and if it feels rough it is real”, is there an accurate test for the individual to do to determine genuineness, and whether salt or fresh water type?
Believe it or not, the best test you can do to determine whether a pearls is genuine or not without the assistance of a professional is the tooth test. But this test needs to be done correctly.
Take your ‘pearl’ and another object that is made of plastic. One at a time, rub them both over the biting edge of a front tooth. The plastic will feel very smooth, and if the pearl is genuine it will feel like very fine sandpaper in comparison.
Whether or not a single pearl is salt or fresh can be a bit more tricky. There are obvious indicators, but even these are not always absolute. If you have a strand of pearls this is a different story, however.
Freshwater pearls are almost never perfectly round. This is because they lack the mother or pearl bead center found in cultured saltwater pearls. Because saltwater pearls have this bead center they are often perfectly round.
So if the pearl or strand of pearls is not round, they are likely freshwater pearls. If they are round, they are likely saltwater pearls.
There are of course many other determining factors. I suggest checking out some real salt and freshwater pearls to compare.
