Interpet Liquifry

I need advice on raising pandacory fry..?

Ive got 7 pandacorys (three being the only ones to have survived) and i have been getting eggs for 2 years and i put them in a breeding trap with a plant and Interpet liquifry no1 for egg layers but since the fist three that never went in to the breeding trap none of the fry are surviving. Has anyone got any tips or suggestions to help please

I breed cory and I have no problems, so this is how I do it.

Get a big straw and cut it at about 1.5″. Cross cut that section at 0.5″ halfway through, then cut along length ways to create an egg shovel.

The fry tank is 3.5 UK gallon, it has a junior box filter powered by a small air pump and a 50Watt heater, the substrate is bright orange Roman gravel, (makes the fry easier to see). My tank is always running as I put Guppy fry in whenever they appear accidentally, but yours will need to be cycled. My temp 24C

Cory never go into breeding traps. Spawning occurs with the male chasing the female, then the female chasing the male. When she catches him they form the famous Cory T. That’s her using him to fertilise the eggs she has under her plecs. Then she goes off and sticks them to rocks, the filter and mostly the glass. This goes on for about 12 hours and the whole tank is used. There will be eggs everywhere, expect about 60 per female.

When they are deposited they are soft. Leave the eggs for 4 hours and they become hard. Get your egg shovel and scrape them off the glass in groups. Use a match or the inside of a Bic to push the eggs out of the straw into the fry tank. When you have gathered as much as you can see add a drop of methylene blue. (very important as moving the eggs has made them susceptable to fungus).

They take 4-5 days to hatch, but don’t excite yourself they are to small to see. They surface take a gulp of air to fill their swim bladder and dive for cover. Normally the synthetic wool at the top of the box filter is chosen.

I feed crushed flake to begin with then when I can see the fry I start with a “very” small amount of catfish pellets. Daily 10% water changes, but well clear of the bottom with the syphon and air line though slow is the best way to do them.

The fry will reach 10mm in a matter of weeks, but then they stop growing and it will be about 8 months till they are ready for sale, but at 10mm the dorsal and armour has formed and you can put them into community tanks to grow on.

I breed Nanus,Bronze and Peppered for retail and the above works for me. Most of the time I have more eggs than I can cope with. Leaving eggs in the spot they where laid greatly reduces their survival rate, but about 5% will survive in a community tank. The first you’ll notice is a smaller version joining the others, it happens anyway, you’d be lucky to scrape all the eggs every time.
