46 gallon saltwater tank?
My boyfriend and I, in months to come, are considering switching his 46 gallon that is housing his two very large cichlids into my new saltwater tank. I have had experience with a 55 gallon salt before, that had live rock and that went easy. But he wants to do some small reef and stuff. I’m not too familiar with reef yet, and was looking for some input for chemicals/nutrients for reef, lighting, beginner leveled reef types, etc.
This will be my first Reef Tank so I am willing to wait the limits and everything.
And please do not tell me I cannot do a 46 gallon, I’ve seen pictures and set ups. I’m not wanting an all out full thing, just a few simple ones.
I would say def. get a skimmer they make things so much easier and a good light is a must. you will need between 3 watts per gal. and 7 watts per gal. I have 5 watts and can keep almost everything (although lower lighting coral like mushroom don’t seem to do as well) I would recommend softies because they are easier to keep than hard coral.
dosing depends on what you want to keep. so I would do some research maybe join a Reef forum and ask questions.
a sump is not necessary but is great for added water volume and hiding tank equipment. It also allows you to get a better skimmer (all in sump skimmers are better than hang on tank skimmers) and just because it’s rated for a 75 gallon tank doesn’t mean it’s big enough for a 46 gallon so I would also recommend getting a larger one (at least 3 times the size of your tank) If it’s too small to handle your bio-load than there is not much you can do about it- if it’s too large you could just use it at night plus you can add fish without needing to upgrade(which can get quite expensive when you keep upgrading your equipment) you will also need to get a powerhead or 2 to help circulate the water.
buy lots of live rock at least 1 lb. per gallon (2 lbs per gal. would be ideal) and the last piece of advise I can think of is to stock wisely (never impulse buy) always research before you buy anything it saves you money and a big headache later on. (have you ever tried to catch a destructive fish? it’s a nightmare)
