Marine Reef Tanks
Need alot of Help and advice on getting my first salt water 12G Nano Cube, coral reef marine tank? and Ich?
Okay so I want to get a nice fish tank ( the Nano Cube 12 Gallon. )
But I don’t know much about fish. I like how pretty the saltwater fish are and how the tanks look on youtube.
*How hard is it to keep one, what does it take? The tank I want to buy comes with the special lighting and starting stuff etc (look it up if you have the time).. and for 60 dollars I could buy a coral nano pack. (don’t know much about coral)
I’d get a pair of clown-fish and one of those cleaner shrimps… I think.
Can somebody explain to me how you keep one of these tanks and everything you have to do. Daily, weekly and monthly?
And as for the ich question.. is it common and how does your take get it? I wouldn’t want it so I would like to know how to prevent it.
well you asked alot here but i can help out i believe. The problem with nano tanks, (a 12g tank is consiterd nano) is that there is less water volume. That means that any “spike” in any unwanted problem is going to be multiplied becasue there is not much room for error and dillition. The things you will need to buy are as listed
The tank
Salt mix (i use instant ocean but many people say it is not good enough for reef, i just havent tried anything else and i dont have any problems so i havent tried anything else)
Water while this seems self explanitory filtered water is the best, you can buy your own reverse osmosis system but that will put you back atleast 100 dollars, for that size tank you can use the filtered water at the grocriey store.
test kits, there are many brands out there, what your gonna want to have ATLEAST is ammonia nitrate and nitrite test kits, then when you start reefing more you gonna want atleast alkilinity and calcium test kits too. your gonna need a hydromiter or a refractometer to test the specific gravity (or salt to water ratio)
now as far as the fish you want that sounds fine for the size tank, you could even probably add one more SMALL fish, such as a damsel (be careful damsels are punks) or a clown goby or something.
When you setup your tank your gonna want to let it cycle, im not gonna explain that because this answer is long enough, just google it and you will find it.
As far as maitanace you will want to change out no less than 20 and no more than 50 percent of the water a month, using ro water if you can
ich is tricky and there is a way to protect yourself from it but it takes alot of patiance, its called a quarrantine tank, google it, find it, use it if you have the patiance.
I tyeped alot but there is alot of information on it, it seems quite overwhelming but I think its worth it, there is somtheing about having a saltwter tank knowing that everything in your tank is living and not dead.
I would suggest buying a book to help you start out, or if you dont want to do that you can find a weath of information online.
