Why Social Media Needs “Mood Filters”

Now, when I want to go online and check up on friends, I just sign on and do so. However, my friends and I are at a definite disadvantage, because none of us really knows exactly why we each signed on and what kind of preferential mood we are in for discussion What will hold our interest during our current session and what kind of “noise” do we wish to filter out on our way to it? Yes, each time we sign on to a social media platform it is for a session. And, we may be in a different mood from day to day and hour to hour. It’s not only good or bad moods, it’s also preferential moods. In other words, what topic someone is interested in discussing with others at some point in time.
We all ”drop by” social networking sites for finite periods of time and we each do so looking for “something” unique to satisfy us. One hour it may be for everyone elses take on a particular news story. Two hours later, I might just want to be entertained with humor and good nature. However, in the middle of the night, when I can’t sleep and sign on to Facebook or MySpace, I might only wish to talk about sports and the games just concluded. Our moods are subject to change based on hormones and the kind of day we are having or just had. Right?
So, what is it that social networking is missing out on? Mood Filters. We all need a box to check off that says, “Entertain me,” “Talk Politics,” “Talk Sports,” “Talk Current Events,” and yes, “Talk to Women.” And “Talk to Men.” These latter two categories are for the dating crowd and not happily married guys and gals like me. Now, no one expects lewd and crude to come into play with either of these two latter categories when checked off , but if it DOES come to that there should be places for those folks to go for more private discussions. Otherwise, it’s all about the superficial stuff that gets people to the “Like” stage. After that, it may be time to go off-line with it.
So, how would these Mood Filters with check boxes actually work? Simple. They would tie together only those “Likes” (Friends) in one’s network with the same interest boxes checked for that particular session. The rest of their network would only see what kind of preferential moods their friends are in and know that they have limited their discussions to a topical area of choice. At the end of each session, the service(s) hosting Mood Filters would rely on a default setting to revert each account back to a “General Talk” category in which everyone in one’s network is once again back in the loop.
Let’s face it. From time to time we’ve all walked in on someone, who wasn’t in a good mood and have gotten clobbered by no fault of our own. We lament not being forewarned. The social media experience would be so much better if we all had a tool to use that would help us stear clear of these type of situations. It’s all good – it just makes social media even better.
