I have about 20 buckets of “5 gallon” size around my house, they are all different sizes. It’s not that important really, but if you really want to know, measure the radius of the bucket in inches, and use the mathematical equation for the area of a circle (π*r²) and multiply that by the measurement of the buckets height, and divide by 232 (the number of cubic inches in one gallon, approximately).
As far as setup and maintenance, make sure you understand kH carbonate hardness, and the nitrogen cycle. Also, you will probably want to perform partial weekly water changes on the order of 10-20%.
