Oceanic Bio Cube 14 Gallon Nano Reef Tank questions?
i am new to salt water and have gotten from someone one of these bio tanks. i plan on getting some live rocks how much do i need for this size tank? [14 gallon] and I read somewhere it was better to replace the little plastic balls in the filter area with small pieces of live rocks, Would this be better? how long do i let my new tank cycle for before i buy the live rocks?
I plan on using Tonga live rocks
or how good is this lace rock?
Hi there, I just recently purchased a 24g nano cube so I have been doing tons of research trying to find out what to do…..as far as live rock goes, you want a minimum of 1 lb per gal. 1.5-2lbs would be even better. You can never have too much!(providing you can fit it in the tank). The live rock will actually do most of the filtration for you(breaking down ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates). I have also removed my bio balls since they become a trap for detritus to accumulate. Same thing goes for using live rock rubble in the filter area. If you have enough LR in the main tank, you really dont need it in the filter area trapping detritus and making it hard to clean back there. Mainly just keep your sponges back there rinsed out (when you do water changes, in the tank water u remove or in RODI water) so they dont get a funky build up. Put live sand in it ( 10-15 lbs) and then add your live rock, then fill it with your saltwater. Then…..the waiting begins!! lol It can take a month or so to cycle depending on the quality of your live rock and if its cured or not. (buy cured if possible) a site that I have been going to alot lately -tons of useful info……Nano-reef.com check it out! As each day goes by you will notice more and more life in the tank. I spent the first week of my setup staring at a bunch of rock for hours…my friends thought I was crazy lol.
