Is the ozone hole in Antarctica really a problem, and is it really our fault?
The sun light doesn’t shine through the ozone layer on the south pole. In fact, it shines through almost twice as much ozone from the higher latitudes bofore it reaches the polar areas. I would venture to say we’ve created as much or more ozone than we’ve depleted, and the sun creates the earths own ozone. We’ve only been monitoring the ozone levels since the early eighties, and we saw a decline in the first year of research. So how are we to know this isn’t a natural phenomenon? How are we to use this in our evidence for our pollution having caused global warming?
Actually cars release gases than when in contact with upper atmosphere UV rays, form ozone, not destroy it.
There is a natural cycle for the amount of ozone in the atmosphere. Every year a hole over the poles in the ozone layer forms, and then gets closed up. So the formation of the hole is a natural thing. The problem that scientists are seeing is that each year the hole seems to be getting a little bigger. Scientists feel that, in time, the hole that forms will cause major problems.
The ozone layer is also in a cycle. When UV rays hit an ozone molecule (O3) it splits into oxygen gas (O2) and a free oxygen molecule (O). When more UV rays hit an oxygen gas molecule, it bonds with the free oxygen to form ozone. It’s this continual cycle that happens in the ozone layer. Certain gases that we emit, such as chloroflourocarbons (CFC’s) remove ozone.
