What is a good protein skimmer for a 30 gallon saltwater Reef Tank?

I want to set up a saltwater Reef Tank for some clownfish and maybe an anemone and some coral eventually. I currently have a wet/dry filtration system and was planning on getting a protein skimmer for my new tank. However I haven’t a clue on what kind/brand/size of protein skimmer to get. THE NEW TANK WILL PROBABLY BE AROUND 30 GALLONS WITH MAYBE 4-5 CLOWNFISH. I WOULD LIKE A NICE PROTEIN SKIMMER BUT NOTHING TOO FANCY OR EXPENSIVE BUT ALSO NOTHING CHEAP. Thanks for your advice.

If this is your first marine tank then I would avoid anemones, these rarely last in captivity and most die after a few months. They are also very demanding in terms of light and water quality. Captive-bred clownfish have no need for an anemone and in fact they would never have even seen one.

I also have some reservations on keeping a group of clownfish, this should only be done if you have a very large tank. I would only keep a pair in a tank of this size.

When it comes to choosing a protein skimmer, I recommend selecting a model that is rated for around twice the volume of the tank as manufacturers then to be a little too optimistic. Since you don’t have a sump then a hang-on model would probably be the best choice. If you can afford it then I would look into the Deltec MCE300.
