How To Make Sure Wood For Your Aquarium Will Be Safe
Driftwood for aquariums should be carefully selected and prepared in order to keep your fish and other aquatic life safe. Natural wood can leach unwanted chemicals and import biological pests into your water. But when you choose the right wood and prepare it properly, natural driftwood can be a wonderful addition to an aquarium.
Softwoods, including pine, cedar and fir, should be avoided as driftwood for aquariums since these resinous woods can have toxic chemicals, and also are more likely to decay in your aquarium. Hardwoods like oak, hickory and manzanita are usually better suited for aquarium wood.
The safest way to get safe driftwood for aquariums is to purchase it from a reputable aquarium supplier or aquarium driftwood supplier who knows which wood is safe. But this does not mean you can not use wood that you find on your own.
Make sure the wood is not from an area where pesticides or other chemicals have been used. Dry weathered wood that you find on the ground can be more safe than wood you find in a stagnant pond or other body of water.
Aquarium driftwood should be scrubbed clean to remove any dirt, moss, lichen, bark or other debris. Many people like to boil the wood for a while to kill any pathogens. Two hours is a common boiling time but some will say as much as 8 hours.
Most wood will leach tannin into your water, especially when first submerged. Tannins can color your water brown and decrease the pH of your water. In some cases the brownish water is desired but for most, the brown water is unwanted. Tannin can be leached out of the wood by soaking it in water for a while before putting the wood in your aquarium. When soaking the wood, change the water every couple days. The length of time needed to soak the water will depend on the type and size of the wood. A couple weeks is enough for some but larger pieces may take months. Low tannin driftwood for aquariums like manzanita should take less time.
