should I have rock or sand in a 50g saltwater Reef Tank?
plz help me!! im buying a tank tomarrow and i would like to know whether sand or rock would be a better habitat for all the different species of fish i may put in the tank. I have heard that some fish and crabs can move the rocks around. But i also hear that sand can be pretty messy and make you change filters more frequently…??? help?
I would use a fine Aragonite sand for the substrate. You will want 2-3″ ideally, unless you want to house burrowing creatures in your tank, then you may want a depth of 3-5″. It will make the tank cloudy for the first few days, but after it settles, it’s not messy unless you stir it up a lot.
I would go with live rock for biological filtration (among other benefits). Generally, 1-2 pounds per gallon is recommended. It can become quite expensive, so adding it slowly over time is also acceptable, as long as the rock has been fully cured. Live rock is pretty heavy, so I wouldn’t worry about crabs or fish moving it, unless the rock is placed in such a way that it is very unstable (which you shouldn’t do anyways).
