Round Fish Tank Aquarium
Ideal starter fish for children & parents to care for & essential equipment needed advice please.?
Our children have talked us round! So we have said over the next 2 months we will get one but they have to research – types/tanks/care etc
They want a quite big aquarium, with fish of varying sizes. We have about £350 to spend on tank/fish/essentials. We went to pets at ho** store but they were saying we needed loads of other things and the bill was over £600 (we ran away quickly).
My son wants a little shark type fish and my daughter wants a big fantail goldfish and an angel fish. We are not bothered but prefer graceful looking bigger fish.
Can you please advise to what would make the ideal beginner fish/tanks etc. Thank you
Goldfish are really not a beginner fish, because they need so much water and tank cleaning. The recommendation is that they should have 37-74 L *per fish*. They look cute in a goldfish bowl but they die– just read all these posts from questioners wondering why their goldfishies die– too little water.
I’d recommend starting them with a betta, and getting one for each child. They’ll really enjoy watching the bettas flare at each other, so it can be fun to have two of them.
The reality is (I can say this as a mom) is that they’ll be interested for a little while, but it will end up being Mom’s responsibility and Mom’s fish after not too long. So, Mom should get what she wants and is willing to take care of.

Get your information from experienced fishkeepers.
If you have Craigslist in your area, I would check there for cheap used aquarium equipment. It’s often 1/3 – 1/2 of what you’ll pay for the exact same thing brand new in the store. Because people often do not do their homework, like you’re doing, they are not successful in keeping their fish and they get rid of the equipment after only a few months.

The most important inhabitant of any aquarium is the invisible colony of beneficial bacteria that will consume ammonia and nitrite waste from your fish. The care and feeding of these bacteria is essential, and a solid understanding will be the difference between success and being discouraged.
