Saltwater Fish Tank Filtration
What medication should I use for my saltwater tank?
I have 2 fish in my 72 gal saltwater tank that have tiny white specs all over their bodies. It just appeared today and I want to medicate it as soon as possible, but im not sure which kind of medication to use. I just diagnosed what disease the fish have with one of those little mardel charts. In the past I used coppersafe to treat this kind of problem, but now that i have a flame angel and chocolate chip starfish i cant any more. What medicine should i use? I would prefer one that doesn’t knock off the biological filtration. Does melafix work? I have some of that but im not sure if it would fix a problem like this. From your personal experience with saltwater fish what should i use?
You have Ich, it is different from FW than SW. In SW it appears as if someone dusted your fish with sugar. I know I’ve had to deal with it before. What happens is your fish gets stressed and its slime coat that protects it from this parasite becomes thin. then the ich attaches itself to the gills then the coat, then falls off only to re hatch and attach to other hosts. The tomin then fall to the bottom of your tank, now this is where FW and SW differ, if it were fW you would have an outbreak on your hands, having to raise the temp and mix salt into your tank just to get rid of it. But with salt, all you need to do is turn your temp back to a sustainable temperature (this is after the spots have disappeared and they will in a couple of weeks at the most if you turn your temp up to about 80 degrees F) and most important, keep your parameters in perfect condition and your fish healthy, I would recommend Garlic Power, it will boost their immune system, just mix a couple of drops in their food and let it set for about five minutes. then serve. If you want to kill it out of your tank, there are very few options, but one of them is a medication called ICH-X. I used it and the ich was gone off of my fish within two days. See in SW the fish have a natural ability to fight ich off, where as in FW the fish usually succumb to the disease. So you have that riding on your side as well. Just keep up with your water changes, use the ICH-X, and keep your fish healthy and your parameters in check. Good luck!
