Saltwater Reef Tank Temperature
Saltwater Reef Metal Halide Question???
I recently swapped lights on my 12 gallon nano tank from a 5500K 13 watt compact fluorescent to a 14000K 70 watt metal halide. My tank is 15″ tall, 18″ wide in front, and 21″ in back. I placed the new halide 6″ above the surface of the water. Is this too close? It raised the temperature in the tank from 79 degrees to 82 degrees today. How far can it be raised and still have its maximum performace? Also, I have a couple of different polyps, a mushroom, a few different small things attached to the liverock it came with, a yellowtail damsel, and a clownfish. The tank has been established for about 5 months. Will I notice a difference in growth rates of the polyps and mushroom i have?
Not sure you needed a MH light for your stock… Most of the heat comes from the light being absorbed by the things in your fish tank, including the water. So moving the bulb away won’t help all that much except that less light is going into the tank. Of course, you want more light, which is why you bought that fixture to begin with.
You can go to 82 degrees without too much trouble but much higher than that will be a problem. At 84 degrees things will start to die. Try keeping a fan blowing across the top of the water if the temperature gets too high.
