Saltwater Reef
If i get a 55 gallon saltwater Reef Tank do i need a protein skimmer.?
I know you need a filter, heater and fluorescent light but you need a protein skimmer.
Depends a lot on what you’re planning to keep. If you just want fish, then you wouldn’t have to have one. If you’re planning to keep corals or anemones, I’d definitely recommend one as these are far less tolerant of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in the tank, and the skimmer removes the material that decomposes to create these from your tank (something a ‘regular’ hang on or canister filter can’t do).
And if you’re planning corals and anemones (photosynthetic organisms) you will need more than a standard fluorescent light – a compact fluorescent or T-5 system is the very minimum, or a metal halide, by itself or in combination with one of the other two for organisms with more intense lighting needs.
