help with baby brine shrimp hatchery?
i have had my brine shrimp hatchery going for 48hrs at 80 and now i have stopped air flow i get a cloud of orange at the bottom of the bottle and when i take some i see no movement or very little and i have a few at top still going mad so why aint they like this at the bottom of the bottle? and what do i feed them?
Take a magnifying glass to the orange specks to be sure they aren’t moving. If not, you probably have a bad batch of artemia cysts (“brine shrimp eggs”).
The nauplii (“baby brine shrimp”) don’t need to eat for their first couple of days or more, because they still have a yolk sac attached to them which gives them nourishment. It is at this stage that they are most nutritious to fish– the yolk actually has a much higher food value than the baby brine shrimp themselves. Therefore, most aquarists feed the newly-hatched brine shrimp to the fish, and don’t try to feed the brine shrimp or keep them.
If you want to raise them to a large size to feed larger fish, though, it’s possible to do so in a tank of hypersaline (very salty) water (10 gallons or larger) with aeration and/or filtration. Their natural food, and probably the best food for them, is free-floating single-celled algae, which you can raise in separate containers under bright light. However, the baby shrimp will eat any food that is the right size (very tiny). You can buy special “Artemia feeds” from aquarium supply outfits.
