Need ideas for 20 gallon tank??!!!!!!!!!!!!?

I have all the decor figured out just need some beautiful fish to go with it the theme of the tank is Spongebob with neon plants! Someone plz help!! I want a variety of freshwater fish!!!

Oh, god! Wife and I made that mistake with our first tank. Had neon decorations, neon plants, multicolored gravel and a black light at night! Even got glowfish!! We called it our Disney tank and ended up hating it! I did my next tank with natural colored stone and plants and wood and it looked so much nicer. Think about it again and make sure that is what you want. Its a pain to change out gravel if you change your mind. Fish just look so much nicer against a natural background. But, if its what you want, then hey, go for it. I can definitely see the appeal.

For 20 gal, you can do one goldfish. With smaller fish, the streamlined fish, use the 1″ of fish per one gal of water rule. But this doesn’t apply with deeper bodied fish like corys and other catfish, goldfish obviously, gouramies, etc. There are lots of websites that can give you ideas, like tetrafish.com and one that is very good is aqadvisor.com. It will tell you if you are overstocked and if you have enough filtration. There is also a link there about stocking different sized tanks.

You could do a school (at least six) of neon, glowlight or cardinal tetras, harlequin rasboras or a couple platys (just make sure to get males because even if you have only one female she can be holding sperm and have babies). Um… this is fun! What else? I have a 23 gal tank and at one time (before a heater malfunction wiped out the whole tank) I had 7 harlequin rasboras, three platys, one dwarf gourami, five guppies (all of the fish were orange fish – looked cool!) and four african dwarf frogs. Yeah, I was a little overstocked, but also was overfiltered and did weekly large water changes. Now, I’ve restocked the 23 gal and have 6 serpae tetras, a platy and five african dwarf frogs. I would like to get one more larger, midwater fish, like another dwarf gourami for this tank.

Just some ideas! Good luck. Its so fun trying to decide what to stock a tank with. and you have a decent sized tank so you have lots of options. Just make sure that you do your research and make sure that the fish are compatible and not too big. Don’t overstock. Don’t add too many fish at one time. Just a couple a week. Read up on the nitrogen cycle. Plan to do at least 25% (I do 50%) water changes weekly with dechlorinated water (use Prime) and get a test kit (API master test kit) so that you can test your water.
