What to Ask Before Hiring a House Waterproofing Contractor
Waterproofing your home is an investment that could save you a great deal in the long run. You may be seeking a contractor because you have had issues with water in your basement, or because you are hoping to prevent water issues; one way or another, hiring a contractor you trust and one who will sell you the services you need is of paramount importance. Before contacting any contractors, be sure to do your homework. After finding out which contractors are in your area, check them out with the Better Business Bureau and online. Once you have narrowed your search to two or three, reach out to them to request a consultation.
What is his role?
When you request a consultation, the purpose should be for the company to send an experienced professional to inspect your basement and make diagnostic recommendations. However, some companies send salespeople who have had minimal practical training. Be sure you are speaking with an experienced waterproofing professional who is qualified to make recommendations.
Who will do the work?
Will the consultant be returning to complete the work, or are there other teams in the company who complete the projects? What are their qualifications? Does he subcontract? This is a very important question because you may have chosen this company due to referrals and qualifications, but a completely different contractor may be doing the work. This could be a company you had ruled out in your search.
Do You Have References?
Be sure to ask for references. A professional and successful contractor will have written references from past clients for whom he has completed house waterproofing projects. If he/she has no written references, ask for the names and numbers of two former clients you can contact. This is a question which is anticipated by a reputable professional, and it should raise a red flag if the contractor cannot or is unwilling to produce references.
Are You Properly Licensed and Insured?
A professional contractor will be able to produce proof of any licenses he carries. Insurance is very important because if one of his employees gets hurt while working on your house, you will be held accountable if he does not carry insurance for his employees while on the job. Additionally, licensing and insurance will serve to safeguard you if he or one of his employees damages your home while completing your house waterproofing project.
Get It In Writing
Once the consultant has inspected your home and reached his/her conclusions, be sure to get his diagnostic conclusions and bid on your house waterproofing project in writing. Be sure to inquire about hidden or additional charges that may be incurred that do not appear on the bid. Once you have met with two or three consultants, compare your bids and make your choice. Be sure that you look at more than just price; the answers to the above questions should play a part in which contractor you choose, as should your own comfort level with each consultant. Then, when you hire your contractor, you have a written bid to protect you from inflated charges.
