Why do I need to ensure appliances are off before adding credit to my gas?
I have a card top-up system for gas. When I top up the card and insert it into the box, it says “If appliances off, hold A”, and I am required to hold the A button for a few seconds.
Why should my appliances be off before I do this, and what would happen if the appliances weren’t off (Would it be different depending on whether I had run out of gas previously or not?)?
Specifically, my boiler doesn’t seem to be getting gas – could this be because it was on when I pressed the button?
They want you to have the appliances off, because it is a safety precaution. There can be a spark from your appliances which can then ignite the gas, this is also why the recommend not getting in and out of your car while pumping, because of the static electricity.
