Tropical Fish Tank Equipment

How to cycle a fish tank?
About 3 years ago I got a 10 gallon fish tank, and it hasn’t been used since then. Please could someone who has experience with cycling tanks (I don’t even know what ‘cycling’ a tank means >_<) tell me... how to? I would like to have a tropical fish tank but 3 years ago I didn't do it properly and my fish unfortunately died. Is there a particular way I have to cycle the tank because it is old? And what equipment do I need because I think I'm missing some parts? I tried searching google but I still really didn't get it. Basically, I have no experience whatsoever about fish. I would write down some of the parts that I found with the tank but... I don't know what they're called. Oh and my tank is really dirty too and has a bit of mould, will this harm the fish? Will it be ok if I just give it a good clean?? Thanks so much if you can help!!
Cycling a tank is establishing a bacteria bed that will eat the ammonia fish produce. Look up the nitrogen cycle. During a cycle you add either fish or pure ammonia and the bacteria will slowly grow to that ammonia level. If you do not cycle a tank and you add alot of fish all at once because there is no bacteria to eat the ammonia that level will spike and could and often does kill fish.
No, use because the tank is 3 years old there is no special treatment. If its been empty wash it out to get dust out or if it has been full of water to a complete water change and clean the tank up. Then fill it again and add a source of ammonia (pure ammonia, fish, or fish food). Doing a fishless cycle (with the pure ammonia) is faster and you will not loose fish due to ammonia levels.
You’ll need the tank, a hood (light and top), a filter, a heater (not needed for coldwater fish), gravel, decor, test kits, gravel vacuum, and a bucket. You’ll also need water conditioner.
