“mono mono twins with a very thin membrane”?
I went to the doctor a couple weeks ago they did an ultrasound and she said that my twin girls were mono mono with a very thin membrane.. Im not absolutely sure what this means My appt at the high risk place isn’t until the 23rd and it seems to be taking forever..!..from the research I have done on the internet.. it says that this is very uncommon… and that the mortality rate is about 60 percent… Can anyone give me some advice… or knowledge from personal experience thank you!
mono mono would mean mono-zygotic (identical) mono-amniotic (the same sac), so identical twins in the same sac. BUT if there is a thin membrane… it seems that she means they are mono-zygotic (identical) and diamniotic (2 separate sacs.) That is what it sounds like to me… it IS very rare for identical twins to share the same sac and there is usually a very thin membrane to separate them… so it sounds like she meant there are 2 sacs, not 1.
If they are really mono mono twins, then yes, your pregnancy is very high risk. When 2 babies share a sac the cords can easily get tangled and it must be watched VERY closely to make sure that does not happen and if it does, then they will need to be delivered. If they are diamniotic, it is not nearly as risky, but there are still some risks because they are identical twins, like twin to twin transfusion. Good luck and I hope they are not monoamniotic!
