10 Gallon Reef Tank stocking question?

I have a 10 gallon tank sitting there doing nothing. What would you suggest I put in it for a Reef Tank?

Id like a variety of color

What type of substrate should I use??

Base rock or one big piece of Live rock???

What are some good soft, hard corals, clams and Anemones to put in it

A 10 gallon reef is gonna take some careful planning. If you want Clams and anemones then you will need some intense light. I’d advise quality LED lights such as two BoostLED Par 30 bulbs or Evil Par38 bulbs. These contain 3w LEDs which penetrate much better than cheap 1w LEDs. The small tank means you don’t need as many so LED is a better option than metal halide. Halides would just increase the heat in the tank and cause more water evaporation.

As for clams… doesn’t matter, with good light an photosynthetic clam will work well. Smaller ones (under 2 inches) will need supplimental feeding still.

As for anemone. Most anemone are large and very difficult to care for and in a 10 gallon tank, impossable. However, maxi mini carpet anemonies are suprisingly easy to care for for an anemone and don’t get so big. They can kill fish as any anemone can though. These come in fantastic colors. They can sting all your coral but once planted and happy, they seldom move.

I’d go with multiple rocks. Hard to make caves and hiding places with just one large rock unless it has lots of large holes or you want to drill it out. Use live sand, aragonite.

Your options are limitless especially if using good lights. You can go with soff corals such as mushrooms, zoas, and palys. you can go with hard corals such as acans. I would avoid coral such as frogspawn and hammer in the small tank due to it’s size. If you want bright color, you can always go with a mat of green star polyp throughout the tank combined with a collection of mini carpet anemones.

If you get any type of anemone or difficult animal, I would advise getting an auto top-off to reduce salinity swings from evaporation.
