The sun gives out heat ,light &other rays which travel towards the earth .most of the harmful rays are absorb by the atmosphere . the once that earth are made up of visible light (white or day light) . infra-red (produce heat ) and ultra –voilet.it is the ultra-voilet which produce a suntan .
• UVA: these rays have a long wave length in work on melanin granules already contain in the upper epidermis.they produce a rapid tan in people who tan easily .UVA rays speed up the ageing processes of the skin. They damage the protein fibres which make the skin firm and supple .sometimes they cause allergies.UVA rays are thought to enhance the effects of UVB.
• UVB : these rays have a medium wave length and are stong enough to penetrate cells ,making them produced more melanin they also cause thickening of the epidermis .the tan produced by UVB rays takes longer ti appear then with UVA :the melanin producing cells have to be stimulated into activity befire working their way up through the layers of epidermis .however , the resulting tan lasts much longer
• UVC :these rays have the shortest wave length and “cut off ” before they reach the earth. They do not reach the skin .UVC rays very destructive they are often use in sterilization procedures because they destroyed living cells.when the ozone layer is intact , it acts as a berrier ti UVC rays.
Sunlight is the major cause of skin cancer and it is not only older people who are at risk . in Australia ,children as young as 13 hav died of skin cancer. Fairer skins are usually thinner and need more protection. MORE READ
