Wooden Fish Tank Stands

heating pads and lighting for freshwater fish?
I have a 30 gallon tank im pretty sure, something around there. and i only have a goldfish becuz three others died because i didn’t know that a heater was needed for them. i have a heating pad, but i dont want it to burn my fish and it cant be set to a certain temperature. my stand is also wooden. how do i set this up r is the light the heater? can i buy a light, becuz i dont have a light for my tank? can someone give me some advice?
my tank looks kinda like this (except cleaner lol, and no light, it look like the light could be bought, any one kno how much?): http://www.fishpondinfo.com/photos/fish/tanks/tank404.jpg
heating pad (a little different though): http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752461
btw, i wanna give my goldfish away and get tropical fish
Goldfish should be kept between 60-70 degrees. Over 72 and they will have shorter lifespans. Get a thermometer for the tank and if it in between there then you don’t need a heater. Otherwise get a heater that you can adjust and set it somewhere around 67 degrees. Make sure you have good filtration. On my 30 gallon I have a 70 gallon filter for 2 fancy goldfish. For lighting you can go buy a hood for the tank. A cheaper option that I use for my planted tank though is just a shop light from Home Depot. I have T8 lighting because it is planted, but you could just do T12 lighting for yours… it should be A LOT cheaper than a full hood, just make sure to have something like clear plastic or glass to go between the light and the water.
*Edit* I do mean an in tank heater too, not a heating pad.
